Obituary

Barry K. Cheney, age 74, of Newark, passed away on July 15, 2024, at Ohio State University Medical Center. Barry was born on August 24, 1949, to the late Homer Jr. and Norma (Gosser) Cheney.

Barry is a graduate of Coshocton High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Ohio University and went on to receive a Masters degree in Columbus. He was a teacher at Lakewood High School and spent the remainder of his teaching career at Newark High in the guidance department. Barry loved helping his students and had lasting relationships with many of his students long after they graduated.

During his teaching years his love of flying guided him to learn the art of piloting a plane achieving his goal of a pilot's license. One of his favorite pastimes was traveling with his twin brother. Barry also loved creative and decorative arts. He made beautiful woodcrafts such as rocking horses and loved to create beautiful and unusual one-of-a-kind baskets. He also enjoyed painting in multiple media including pastels and watercolors.

He is survived by his identical twin brother, Terry (Melanie) Cheney; sister, Christine "Dusty" Cheney; nieces, Brooke (Dave) Long and family, Jennie (Paul) and daughter Cheney Jackson. Barry is also survived by his significant other, Dianne Sutton and her sons, Patrick (Valerie)  and Max (Stacy) Sutton and their families; as well as close friends, Al Sowards, Mike Swards and Rob Mast.

A memorial gathering will take place on August 10, 2024, from 2 – 4 PM at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
