Dorothy Atkinson died peacefully in her home in Granville, Ohio on Sunday, August 29th. Her husband and children were by her side. She was 92 years of age.
Born Dorothy Virgine on March 4, 1929 to Ora and Erwin McKay, "Dottie" grew up a farm girl in Frisco, Illinois. Her earliest memories included playing with her brothers, helping her mother with various chores around the house and farm, putting large meals together for the thrashers who came through during harvest season and learning to play the piano. In her teens her father took a job in Mount Vernon and the family moved into town. She was working in the shoe factory when she first caught the eye of Marc Atkinson, who would become her husband of over 73 years. When Marc took a job in Ohio they moved first to Newark, then to Granville where they lived for 50 years.
Dorothy found tremendous satisfaction as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, maintaining their home, gardening, doll collecting and frequently hosting friends and family to overnight stays and large, delicious meals. She and Marc enjoyed traveling back to Illinois to visit family and friends, and in their retirement, exploring the United States in their RV.
She is remembered as a generous, loving woman who always had a kind word and a gentle disposition. Dorothy was predeceased by her daughter Gayla, and is survived by her husband Marc, her brother Kenny (Janet) McKay, sons Alan (Judy) and Eric (Ivy), daughter Hallie (Evan), grandchildren Kelly (Craig), Tracy (Robert), Shane (Beth), Brittany, Alyssa and Felicia, and great grandchildren Ashlyn, Hannah, Zachary, Austin (Ciara), Jacob, Tyler, Jordan, Dominic, Grant and Carleigh.
