Dorothy June Gemmell, 96, of Heath, passed away on September 13, 2025, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio. She was born on September 22, 1928, in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, to the late Charles and Jennie (Carlson) Black.

Dorothy was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother whose life revolved around her family. She never missed a sporting event—no matter the weather—and cherished every opportunity to travel and create lasting memories with her grandchildren. She brought joy and warmth to every holiday and birthday, making each celebration truly special.

In recent years, Dorothy attended First Baptist Church in Heath. A proud and lifetime member of Heath Moundbuilders Kiwanis, Dorothy valued giving back to her community. She also enjoyed vacationing in Myrtle Beach with her sister and niece, a tradition that brought her great happiness.

She is survived by her sons, Rick (Louise), Gordon (Marcia), Chuck, and Kenny (Michelle); son-in-law, Joe Purtell; 12 grandchildren, Lisa (Ramon), Jennie (Allen), Troy, Heather, Christy, Josh, Zack, Matt, Charles, Kaitlyn, Dillon, and Dalton; 17 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Joanne L. Purtell; grandson, Drew Gemmell; brothers, Charles and Bobby Black; sisters, Jean Brown and Joanne Reese; and the father of her children, Walter C. Gemmell Jr.

The family suggests memorial contributions in Dorothy's memory be made to Heath Moundbuilders Kiwanis c/o President Gary Wimer, 722 Radian Dr, Heath Oh 43056.

A graveside service will be held Friday, September 26, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Newark Memorial Gardens.
