Edith Marie Hughes, 79, of Newark, met her Savior face to face on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at the Selma Markowitz Hospice Center. She was born May 13, 1945 in Pedro, OH to the late Paul and Marjorie (Jenkins) Hensley.

Edith was a born-again Christian who faithfully attended Newark Baptist Temple for 50 years. She started working at the age of 13 in the Buckeye Lake amusement park, she later ran Temple Tots Daycare for 14 years, and then worked at Arensberg Pharmacy as a pharmacy tech for 20 years. Edith was a great story teller who enjoyed long car rides, reading Amish fiction, and spending her time with family. Edith was a faithful and loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was loved by those who knew her.

She is survived by her son, James (Tina Cummings) Hughes; grandchildren, Cyle (Amanda) Hughes, Christopher (Ashley) Hughes, and Adam (Tessa) Hughes; great-grandchildren, Cyle Jr., Mackenzie, Madison, James, Katherine, Halie, Aubrey, Lexie, Maddox, and Gavin; and sisters, Dorie McCormick, Raye Jean Sanders, Linda DeVault, and Pauline (Jeff) Wilson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Hughes Sr. and daughter-in-law, Kathy Hughes.

Memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Newark Baptist Temple, 81 Licking View Dr., Heath with Pastor Mark Falls officiating.
