He attended Roosevelt high school in Dearborn, Michigan where he was a multi-sport athlete and where he met his high-school sweetheart, Janice Anne Hearn. After graduation, he spent his first 2 years of college at Henry Ford Community College where he studied chemistry. Wanting to pursue his dream, he applied and was accepted to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he studied and completed a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering. He was the first in his family to get a college degree and was a life long Wolverine fan. While in college, he proposed to, Janice and they were married on September 8, 1956. Two years later, their youngest son, Thomas, was born. In 1976, Gerry was told he would be transferred to central Ohio where Dow was building a new technical service and research center in Granville. Gerry retired from Dow after a distinguished 31 year career where his customers and coworkers all valued his expertise in the polystyrene films business. In retirement, Gerry and Janice enjoyed cooking, international travel and made annual trips to visit each of their sons & families in North Carolina, Minnesota, and Michigan. They continued to live independently at their home in rural Granville until the spring of 2017, when they moved to Wesley Woods Retirement Community.
