Obituary

James (Jim) Francis Sr. passed away on October 2, 2024, at the age of 69 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim passed away peacefully at home surrounded by friends and family. In the days leading up to his passing, he enjoyed visits from many friends and family members.

Jim, an Eagle Scout, graduated from Lakewood High School in 1974. Following high school he enlisted in the Navy where he served as an Aerographer's Mate or naval meteorologist. After serving our nation, he returned to Licking County where he served the community on the Newark Police Department for 20 years until his retirement, in 2000. Even after a career of service, Jim served the community in various organizations including as President of the Newark Area Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and as the Commander of American Legion Post 85 in Newark.

Known for his bright blue eyes and sharp wit, Jim spent half of the year at his cherished second home in Punta Gorda, Florida with his wife Dodie, where he reveled in the sun, surf, sand and seafood. His passion for coastal living was matched only by his love for cooking and socializing with friends, often hosting lively gatherings filled with laughter and good cheer. Nothing pleased him more than spending time together with his children and grandchildren when they'd visit his Florida home. A dedicated Cleveland Browns fan, Jim would spend many autumn days watching football with his sons, sharing in the highs and lows of the season.

Preceded in death by his father, Albert Roe Francis; and mother, Phyllis Mae Francis (Forshey); and grandson, Oliver Francis. He is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Francis (Mickey) of 34 years, children, James (Shannon) Francis Jr., Justin (April) Francis, Heather (fiancé Hunter,) Francis, Michael (Videlia) Francis; four beloved grandchildren, Levon, Ivy, Paige, Everleigh and soon to be fifth, Maverick; and sister, Susan Salina (Francis).

Visitation hours for Jim will be held at Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home 985 N 21st St, Newark, OH 43055 on Monday October 7, 2024, from 4-7 pm with a funeral service for Jim on Tuesday October 8, at 10:30 am, with food and drinks to follow at the American Legion Post 85 in Newark.

In lieu of flowers, it was Jim's wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations which can be made to The Tap Room in Hebron, where on October 19th they will be holding a benefit event for Jim's medical expenses.
