Obituary

John Harold Drury, passed away on October 3, 2026, his 88th birthday. Born to the late Harold Franklin and Ruth (Pugsley) Drury, John grew up in London, OH. He was a graduate of the high school class of 1956 and a member of the London Methodist Church. John graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1960 and was a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He earned his MA ’70 and PhD ’94 in Mathematics Education from The Ohio State University. John had a love of swimming and served as president of the Upper Arlington Swim Club for many years.

For 42 years, John found great joy in teaching mathematics and in sharing his love of learning with others. He started his career teaching high school students at West High School, and then he continued his passion for teaching with college students at Columbus State and OSU. John’s final teaching role was leading the Math Education department at IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis), leaving a lasting impact on the field and on countless future math teachers.

John’s influence reached far beyond the classroom, touching the lives of countless students, teachers, and colleagues. Yet for all his academic accomplishments, he always had time for what mattered most—cheering for the Buckeyes, playing golf, sharing a laugh, and enjoying a beer with family and friends. John will be remembered for his love of learning, his generous spirit, his sense of humor, and most of all, for the people he loved and the lives he made better simply by being part of them.

John is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Romaine (Rector) Drury; daughters, Jane Drury (Jon Wakely) Moran; Ann Drury (Max) Thompson and Lynn Drury (Marc) Mestanas; grandchildren, Andrew (Taylor) Thompson, Sally (Steven) Zimmerman, Michael Mestanas, Jack Mestanas, Tucker Moran, Marc Mestanas and Dylan Moran; great-grandson, Myles Thompson; brother-in-law, Russell Hackett; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Mary Ann (Walter) Campbell.

A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2027.
