John Joseph Maier, age 74, of Newark, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the OSU Medical Center. He was born in Newark on February 8, 1952, to the late John and Emma (Gatton) Maier.

John loved spending time with his family and going to his kid’s softball games; he was the best grandpa ever. He was a teacher in the Newark City School System for over 30 years and coached Middle School basketball as well as other sports. John was an avid baseball fan, especially of the Phillies and Reds. After retiring he enjoyed helping lay asphalt.

He is survived by his children, Lesley (Chris Beale) Maier and Cory Maier; granddaughter, Harper Ann Maier; 11 nieces and nephews; siblings, Rita (Bill) Revercomb, Joann (George) Henry, Jeff (Sue) Maier, and Jimmy (Kristine) Maier; brother-in-law, Dave Swan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Ann Maier; sisters, Connie (Tom) Ellis and Patsy Swan; brother-in-law, David “Rod” Compton; niece, Amy Ellis.

Visitation will be held from 3pm-5pm Tuesday November 3, 2026, at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N 21st. St, Newark, Ohio 43055.
