John Robert Purtell, 71, of Newark, died Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born July 9, 1954 in Gallipolis, OH to the late Robert and Marjorie (Peters) Purtell.

John was an active member of the Second Church of Christ. He was employed by Phoenix Rose Fasteners, where he took great pride in his work and truly enjoyed what he did. John had a deep love for music and cars and was an avid reader. Known for his kind and generous spirit, he was always willing to lend a helping hand—whether repairing cars, fixing things around the home, or doing whatever he could to help someone in need.

He is survived by his sisters, Deborah Blain and Teresa Tierney; nieces, Karel Kinnett and Jenni Mora Valesquez; several great nieces and nephews and godson, William King.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of John to the Second Church of Christ, 19 S. William St., Newark, OH 43055.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026 from 2-4 pm at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark where a memorial service will follow at 4:00 pm with Pastor Eric Miller officiating.
