Philip O. Burgess, age 84, of Newark, passed away on November 14, 2025, at Select Specialty Hospital. Philip was born on February 17, 1941, to the late Mary and James Hodges.
He enjoyed traveling, dirt track racing, cooking for anyone and everyone, and enjoyed the camaraderie of family and friends. Philip proudly served in the United States Navy and was a Newark EMT/Firefighter for over 20 years. He was the superintendent of the Newark Street Department for 15 years, former president of the Democratic party and a member of city council. Philip also played Santa for the lighting of the courthouse for many years. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Jean E. Burgess; children, David (Deborah) Burgess, Vincent Burgess, Julie Burgess; sister, Patricia Hartman; brother-in-law, Bill Selby; multiple nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 1 – 3 pm at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, where his services will immediately follow at 3 pm with Pastor Rob Hartman officiating.
