It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robin Eileen Somers (Shook) on Tuesday, the 29th day of April 2025, at the age of 81.  Robin passed away after a several years battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Robin is survived by her husband of 62 years, James; two children, Jamie (Mike) and Thad; four grandchildren that she dearly loved, Morgan, Olivia, Grant and Charlee; four siblings, John (Kay), Patrick (Sharon), Melissa (Larry), Marti (Mark), numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and lovely friends, especially Brenda Land.

Robin was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Eileen Shook, and her son, Monty Somers. Robin was an educator for Newark City Schools where she worked with students with disabilities and taught kindergarten before becoming a treasured guidance counselor at Ben Franklin Junior High School, Kennedy Junior High School, and finally Newark High School. Retirement from Newark City Schools did not slow Robin down for a minute as she became an admissions counselor for The Ohio State University-Newark Campus where she worked for another decade.  In addition, Robin was a founding member of A Call to College, a member of the Licking County Counselors Association and the Ohio School Counselors Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Perhaps Robin's greatest love and accomplishment was taking wonderful care of her grandchildren.  She spent countless hours driving them to their various extracurriculars, hosting sleepovers, attending all of their school functions, making their favorite meals, sewing costumes, playing games, and providing them with overwhelming love and support.  Robin was an avid reader of any and all mystery and crime books: Grisham, Connelly, Patterson, but especially Grafton!  She loved watching all things NCIS but also enjoyed comedy: Big Bang Theory (she loved the nerdy boys!), Young Sheldon, Mike and Molly, and above all others, The Golden Girls. And she was a health nut: daily speed walking, yoga classes, water aerobics, weight training with a trainer, and always counting out her daily "allowed" Dove dark chocolate candy pieces. In the end, Alzheimer's stole most of her memories, but never her spirit.  She will be missed more than words can describe, but will become a part of each of us as we strive to live our lives with the same tenacity and determination she exhibited throughout her life.

There will be a graveside service held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 12 noon, in Wilson Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 22nd from 1:00-3:00 pm at the historic Buckingham House located at 5 North Sixth Street, Newark, Ohio 43055. If you were a friend of Robin or her family, please feel free to stop by for as little or as long as you'd like. We'll be celebrating Robin with light Hors d'Oeuvres and all of her famous desserts.  Donations in Robin's name to A Call to College will kindly be accepted.
