Sondra Faye Huff, known to all as Sandy, passed away naturally in the early hours of April 13, 2025. She was 83.

Born in Canton, Ohio, Sandy grew up in Carrollton, where she was head majorette and fell for the high school football team's running back, Ronald A. Huff. The two married young and had three children: Deborah, Steven, and Douglas. Sandy put her own ambitions on hold to support Ron's college education, working as a waitress while raising their family. The couple lived in Athens, then Columbus, and eventually settled in Granville. They divorced in 1981, and Sandy later moved to Buckeye Lake, where she found love again with Jack Maier, her inseparable companion until his passing in 2008.

Sandy's life was marked by adventure, generosity, and an irrepressible spirit. A devoted fan of Oprah Winfrey, with whom she enjoyed first-name rapport, Sandy made spontaneous pilgrimages to Chicago to attend live tapings. Sandy loved bright colors, lobster meals, and dogs of all shapes and sizes—especially Atlas, Doug's dog. She carried a huge cup of ice filled with Diet Pepsi at all times. A connoisseur of a good bargain, she never met a discount she didn't like.

Sandy took some college classes earlier in life, but found her true calling later, earning her LPN and devoting herself to caregiving. She worked in family medicine and later in home health, where her dedication was profound—braving snowstorms, rough neighborhoods, and late-night emergencies to be there for her patients, who adored her. She retired only after breaking a leg in her late 70s.

But Sandy's real legacy lies in her generosity. She gave selflessly—to family, friends, and strangers. She spoiled her grandchildren Maggie and Jay with midnight McDonald's runs and Walmart adventures. If one pie was needed, she'd bring three. If someone needed help, Sandy gave—time, money, anything she had. If she had nothing left to give, she somehow found more.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Vera McCully; her brother, Chuck,her sister, Charlene; her daughter-in-law Susan Huff; her beloved niece Chelsea King. She is survived by her sister and Chelsea's mother, Kelly, and by her sister-in-law, Sue (wife of Chuck). She cherished her nieces Melinda, Stephanie, Rebecca and nephew, Tyler, their spouses, and their children, the "California gang."

She was also preceded in death by her longtime partner, Jack Maier, who brought joy and companionship to her later years.

She is survived by her children, Deborah Mansfield (and her husband James) , Steven, and Douglas; and by her beloved grandchildren, Maggie, Jay, Brian, Steven and Sarah; and by Jack's children, John Maier, Cynthia Maier Reed (and her husband Harry), Richard Maier (and wife Angie), Chris Zarker, and Robert Maier, all of whom remained close to Sandy and became family in every meaningful sense.

Jack and Sandy spent many wonderful years together. As Chris Zarker shared, "She was like a second mom to us children and a special grandmother to our children." And, in the grinning words of John Maier, "She spent many years keeping Dad in line!"

In total, Sandy is remembered fondly by a blended family of nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She also leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, friends, and former patients—people whose lives were brightened by her generosity, humor, and warmth.

In a final grand gesture, Sandy has donated her body to science. As such, there will be no typical funeral service. Rather, a memorial celebration will be held at her old stomping grounds, the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club, in the coming months. Details of the event, donations and flowers are soon to come.
