Steven D. Peterson was born on February 7, 1952, in Rockford, Illinois, to Richard and Ila (Elliott) Peterson.

A proud graduate of Boylan Catholic High School and Rock Valley College, Steve built a life rooted in family, hard work, and community. On October 5, 1974, Steve married the love of his life, Connie L. Tettenhorst, at Fischer Chapel on the campus of Rockford College after first meeting over a shopping cart at Logli's Supermarket where the two worked at the time. In 1984 Connie and Steve celebrated the birth of their son Mark. Their love story spanned over five decades, filled with shared adventures, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

Steve dedicated 46 years of his professional life to Woodward Governor (later GE/Baker Hughes), and also took pride in assisting at Goes Funeral Care in Fort Collins, Colorado. A passionate enthusiast of vintage automobiles, Steve owned several Model A Fords and was an active member of the Rockford Model A Club. He also enjoyed collecting antique toys and sports memorabilia, hobbies that reflected his appreciation for history and craftsmanship.

Steve had a deep love for animals and shared his home with many beloved dogs and cats over the years. His gentle nature and affection for his furry companions were a true reflection of his kind and caring spirit.

Steve and Connie made their home in Fort Collins, Colorado, for 30 years before retiring to Newark, Ohio, in November 2022. Together, they explored the world, most recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a cherished family trip through Spain, France, and Italy.

Steve is lovingly remembered by his wife Connie, son Mark, Mark's wife Ali, brother Theodore (Ted), and Ted's wife Deborah (Debbie) of Rockford, Illinois. He is also survived by his aunt Leota Romig of Belvidere, Illinois, uncle Leland Elliott of San Diego, California, and many cousins across the country.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and several beloved aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Sunset Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Rockford, IL, beginning with visitation at 9:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution will be designated at a later date.
