Steven Edward Watts, age 80, of Newark, passed away at the Selma Markowitz Care Center on Sunday, September 27, 2026. He was born in Newark, Ohio, on September 9, 1946, to the late Robert Neal and Martha Jane (Clark) Watts.

Steven was a 1964 graduate of Utica High School where he played 4 sports. Later he was inducted into the Utica Athletic Hall of Fame. Following high school, he attended Kenyon College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He also attended Ohio University.

After earning his degree, Steven taught Government at Watkins Memorial High School, where he also served as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. His passion for athletics and the impact he had on his students and athletes remained a source of great pride throughout his life.

Steven was a member of Neal Avenue Methodist Church, Young at Heart, and the Sons of the American Legion Post #92. He also worked in his family’s business, Watts Restaurant, which was established in 1912. After his parents passed away, Steven became the owner and operator, carrying on the family business and its legacy. Under Steven’s stewardship, Watts Restaurant earned recognition beyond the local community, including being featured in The New York Times with glowing reviews. After more than 100 years in the family, Steven retired from the restaurant with great pride, knowing he had helped carry forward a beloved family tradition and legacy.

Steven was a hardworking man, a good friend to many, and he loved his family deeply. He cherished the time he spent with them in Ohio, Texas, and Florida. He especially enjoyed watching Ohio State football and reminiscing about the “good old days” with family and friends. Steven loved a good time, was a great storyteller and joke teller, and his unmistakable laugh could fill a room and bring smiles to everyone around him.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane (Gough) Watts; children, Bradley (Kelly) Watts and Andrea (Will) Velasco; grandchildren, Camaille Watts, Elaine Watts, and Chloe Velasco; brother, Dr. Greg (Sharon) Watts; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Neal Avenue Methodist Church, 12 Neal Ave., Newark, Ohio 43055. A memorial service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m., with Pastor Dave Warner officiating.
