Sylvia J. Hicks

A funeral service for Sylvia J. Hicks, 87, of Newark, OH, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2026, at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark. Private Burial will be held at Wilson Cemetery.

Sylvia passed away January 29, 2026, at Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born March 23, 1938, in Swords Creek, VA, to the late Cleatis and Lola (Brown) Dye.

She was a devoted mother, homemaker and a self-employed cake decorator whose creativity and care touched many lives. She was a loving mother figure to her many nieces and nephews, who thought of her as a mother when she stepped in to care for them. Sylvia found joy outdoors, spending countless hours in her yard planting flowers, pulling weeds, and nurturing the beauty around her.

She is survived by her sons, Terry (Erin D.) Hicks, Steve (Lori) Hicks, Randy (Donna) Hicks, Ron Hicks, Philip Hicks, and Jeff Hicks; sister, Doris Patterson and Billie Jean Lawson; thirteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy R. Hicks; five brothers; one sister, and two grandchildren.
