NEWARK: William "Bill" Davis Comisford, Sr., age 95, of Newark, Ohio, passed away at home, on Friday, January 12, 2024, and joins his beloved wife, Joy. Bill, the youngest son of Homer Whitcome and Mildred Ada (McKinley) Comisford, was born December 17, 1928, in Newark, Ohio. Bill attended Central Junior High School where he was a member of the Thespian Club for honor students and played basketball. He graduated from Newark High School in 1947 and started working at Newark Stove Company, Cussins and Fearn Store in Newark and then moved to Mansfield to work at the Westinghouse Plant. On June 5, 1949, Bill married his high school sweet-heart, Josephine "Joy" Theresa Stichter. They were married at Neal Avenue Methodist Church in Newark, Ohio by the Rev. Frederick Brown.

Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force on October 17, 1951, during the Korean War. He became a part of the 3920th Air Police Squadron and trained at Sampson, New York and Camp Gordon, Georgia. He was then transferred to the 320th Bombardment Wing, 15th Air Force at March Field, Riverside, California. He would also serve in London, England and the French Morocco, North Africa. He was discharged from the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant on October 17, 1955. While in the service, Bill and Joy had two children. Upon leaving the service the family moved back to Newark, Ohio, where Bill again became employed by the Westinghouse Plant. In 1957, Bill joined his older brother Homer on the Newark Police Department. Bill would go on to serve 23 years on the Newark Police Department, retiring with a rank of Sergeant of Detectives. Retirement came early, as a result of a heart attack and subsequent by-pass surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

Bill was a member of the Newark Masonic Lodge Acme #554 and the Valley of Columbus Sottish Rite. Bill was involved with the Boy Scouts and participated on many of the activities and visited Philmont Scout Ranch with both his sons. Bill attended Central Christian Church and was a long-time member of Neal Avenue Methodist Church. Bill enjoyed traveling with Joy, and together, they traveled all over the United States.

Bill was preceded in death by wife, Joy, his parents, and his brother, Homer Paris Comisford. Bill leaves behind two sons: William D. (Susan) Comisford, Jr. of Summerville, South Carolina and Randy S. (Patty) Comisford of Newark; grandsons, Brandon W. (Angela) Comisford of Charlottesville, Virginia, Shane M. (Jennifer) Comisford of Yulee, Florida, Scott J. (Emily) Comisford of Newark, and Dustin J. (Lola) Comisford of Newark; granddaughter, Melissa B. (Damon) McAnelly of Ladson, South Carolina; and great-grandchildren, Cody, Tyler Comisford, Caleb and Lydia Beale, Emma Blair, Christian, Ciarah, Cameron, Avery, and Bentley McAnelly, and Harley, Elle, Mara, and Ada Comisford; and a great-great-grandson, Malakai McAnelly.

Family and friends may call at the Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N 21st Street in Newark on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 5 until 7 PM. Calling hours will begin at 9 AM. on Saturday,

January 20, 2024, with a celebration of life for Bill to be held at 10 AM, in their chapel, with Pastor David Hogg, a long-time friend of the family, and Rev. Chad Penhorwood, officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery with full Police Honors. Newark Police will be providing a casket watch, while the Newark Masonic Lodge #554 will be conducting a Masonic Service after calling hours on Friday at the funeral home. Military Funeral Honors will be performed by the US Veterans at the grave site.
