William C. Gau III, affectionately known as “Bill” to his friends and “Bubby” to his family, passed away peacefully at his home in Newark, Ohio, on September 12, 2026.

Bill was a proud Marine and a deeply patriotic man who loved his country and lived by the values he held close to his heart. His adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors led him to live in many places throughout his life, including Montana, Kentucky, and even Alaska. A true nomad at heart, Bill never stayed a stranger for long. Everywhere he went, he made friends—especially at the local VFWs and American Legions that became familiar places along his journey.

Bill was incredibly intelligent, with an impressive knowledge and love of history. He could seemingly answer just about any question, and if he didn’t know the answer, he would probably find it in one of the many books he loved to read. He had a curious mind, a deep appreciation for the past, and a love of learning that never seemed to fade.

He was also, in his own unmistakable way, one ornery man. Bill was known for his quick wit, his mischievous nature, and his ability to tell the most inappropriate joke at exactly the most inappropriate time. And somehow, that was part of what made him so unforgettable. He was unapologetically himself, and those who knew and loved him wouldn’t have wanted him any other way.

Above all, Bill was loyal—to his family, his friends, his country, and his values. He lived life on his own terms, followed his own path, and left an impression on the many people fortunate enough to cross it.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and James Gau.

He is survived by his sister, Connie; niece Candice (Sar­ith); nephew Sam (Lexi); and his beloved great-nieces and great-nephews, Roman, Nolan, Peyton, and Logan.

Bill may have wandered many roads and called many places home, but the memories he left behind will remain with the people who loved him. His stories, his humor, his knowledge, his stubbornness, and his fiercely loyal heart will not be forgotten.

Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
